What To Expect During A SPRAVATO Treatment Near Philadelphia

April 29, 2024

Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) can be diagnosed if you tried two or more conventional antidepressants without improvement in your quality of life. If you’ve been diagnosed with Treatment Resistant Depression, you now have another way to find relief with SPRAVATO®. This novel esketamine medication has been shown to help with symptoms of depression, like suicidal ideation and actions.

Notwithstanding, SPRAVATO is used differently than a pill or liquid. It is a highly regulated FDA-approved treatment that can only be given by authorized SPRAVATO providers. So, what can you anticipate during a SPRAVATO treatment Near Philadelphia?

SPRAVATO Can Only Be Given Through An FDA-Approved Provider

SPRAVATO should only be dispensed under direct medical guidance at a facility certified in the SPRAVATO Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. The Counseling Center at Cherry Hill is excited to be a member of the program as an authorized SPRAVATO treatment provider. Before you start your treatments, we will educate you on the benefits and risks of SPRAVATO use, including sedation, dissociation, abuse, and misuse. We’ll also inform you of common side effects, some of which occur directly after the dose and diminish the same day.

What Happens At Your SPRAVATO Treatment

Your first session at our certified SPRAVATO treatment center near Philadelphia is a consultation. You will undergo an assessment to find out if you have treatment-resistant depression and if this medication is right treatment for you. You could be eligible for SPRAVATO if you tried two or more FDA-approved depression treatments and did not see improvement in your symptoms.

Starting SPRAVATO Treatment Near Philadelphia

Your SPRAVATO treatment can commence as soon as your second appointment. But before you begin, there are a couple of things to consider.

  • Find transportation. You’ll need a lift to and from our office as you won’t be allowed to drive or do anything that takes complete alertness until the following day.
  • Bring something to do. As you take the spray, you’ll be kept an eye on for at least two hours. Bring a book, a fully charged phone, or a different form of entertainment.
  • Guidelines for drinking and eating. Since SPRAVATO can cause stomach irritation and vomiting in some patients, you shouldn’t consume food for at least two hours prior and avoid drinking for 30 minutes prior.
  • Don’t take other nasal medications for at least one hour. If you medicate with nasal corticosteroid or nasal decongestant medications, do so at least one hour before your treatment.

Once you’ve made your arrangements, you can start treatment. We will instruct you on the proper way to take the nasal spray. You will self-administer the spray while under the direct care of our healthcare professionals. We’ll watch you for a minimum of two hours for side effects and alert you to when it’s safe for you to go home.

For the first four weeks, you will take SPRAVATO two times a week. Once finished, we’ll examine the effectiveness of your dosage and suggest the next steps that takes into account your progress, symptoms, and other factors.

What Does SPRAVATO Feel Like?

SPRAVATO provides a calming, relaxed state that helps diminish your symptoms of Treatment-Resistant Depression. The dosage does not cause sleepiness in most patients, but you may feel sleepy or doze off during your session. The tiredness or sleepiness you feel should go away not too long after the visit ends or during your monitored recovery time.

Other complications are possible, including dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or disorientation. However, many patients experience very few or no side effects at all.
